'when i was a boy' or 'things change to stay the same' timothy r gates, 11/06/2012
was told, 'blacks are fine in their place'
-none were invited to ours
was told, 'queers go to hell'
-a beloved uncle being found out, died
was told, 'women were under men's authority'
-heard many beat and no one spoke up
still told, 'they're taking our jobs'
-none rushing to them, or the jobs
still told, 'gays are fine in their place'
-none invited to lead the prayer group
still told, 'women are free to do anything they want'
-none free to do what they're told they cannot
was told, still being told
-like an old revival meeting,
run down the isle,
grab the rail
-all praise their god
as long as things change to stay the same.'
*Yes, many things have improved a thousand percent compared to my youth, yet if you ask the right questions
you'll find that much of the old bigotries still exist, only in different outfits and masks, plus reversing some of them at time, but not forgetting the old one either, and absolutely making the white
northern liberalism's hypocrisy observed in my youth not unlike the pious love sermons of today, still ultimately requiring others to fit how they're told to fit and 'you'll then go far.'
