Brush strokes

 ‘Brush strokes’ Trgates,8/21/2026

Dogwoods and Willows

weep in hope’s redemption,

Cardinals and Redbirds

welcome their empathy.

other Redbirds joined by Ravens

sing their divergent tunes,

like a Psalmist’s lyre

an ironic by name Lyrebird

weds these choral and visual artists.

synchronicity or it’s the day’s breath,

tears and laughter,

whispers and pauses,

prayers or silence

join the unseen breeze

giving trees and birds flight

for their brush strokes

between the heavens.

Morning’s joy

 ‘Morning’s joy’ Trgates,8/30/2026

at each setting Sun

as “evening and morning” were the first day”

we close our eyes until Sun’s rising.

at each birth, anointing of transition

as with each Blessed Repose

we hear those looking on with those near.

at each prayer “thy kingdom come”

as when “the Spirit like a Dove” came home

we hear “behold the Kingdom is now here.”

evening’s recline finds its rest

as its eyes open with those watching or near

joining a Psalm’s refrain to morning’s joy.

‘Love’s stroll with grief’ Trgates,8/23/2024

after that last fist of red dirt

tossed upon their goodnight repose,

after the gracious cliches shared

between family, friends

and many you don’t recall,

after the embraces

and our collective aphorisms

since we really have no idea what to say,

one friend looks at you and says,

“I know it hurts like hell

questions and answers matter not

like other such days

we’ll feel it together.”

then we share food, coffee and bread.

next day,

at the Outer Banks,

different yet similar to the Gulf,

treading water,

before you know it the undercurrent’s

pulled you out too far, and

far from sight of those on the beach.

scared shitless,

waves escalating, cascading

over me —

for a moment, seemed like ages,

every last fist of red earth arose

every person said goodbye to

every person who is baptized

by our questions and answers

washes over you.

miles down the coast,

finding yourself where your feet

finally touches sand,

walking out

for whatever reasons you exhale,

“Thank you.”

exhausted, you trek back,

don’t say anything to anyone,

well spent you know one strange thing,

everyone’s part of your hello and goodbyes,

yet the gift is with

the person in front of you.

pausing, appreciating the stroll.

That, next, and

 ‘that, next, and’ Trgates,9/6/2926

awakened from sleep,

didn’t know it was a dream

only to be reminded you’re, they’re resting,

perhaps why we visit while sleeping.

awake we think in timelines,

yet reflection finds Kronos’ path

sees more clearly through Kairos’ stroll.

it’s been offered

there’s a question,

which is true

the dream or one having the dream?

are we a butterfly

dreaming we’re human,

or the reverse?

funny, it matters not,

only that we’re faithful in either.

awakened from deep sleep,

looking around it seems normal,

at least that which is not abnormal,

whatever the continuum

“Thank you” is appropriate.

that, then

“next, and.”

There are moments

 ‘There are moments’ Trgates,9/9/2026

there are moments

Jesus knows,

so do I,

a deluge leaves scars

like geological strata,

beauty from burials.

there are moments

eyes filled,

like coming up from baptism,

perhaps no voice from above,

a Dove and Raven’s duet

“forevermore” and an olive branch coo.

Angels and devils

 Awakened from dreams,

Friends when gone

aren’t angels or devils,

remembering everything

you look into their children’s faces

seeing their memories,

and pray they have sweet dreams.

then you pause and think,

angels and devils don’t know such gifts.

Perhaps a freak flag

 ‘perhaps a freak flag’ Trgates,9/302026

at sixteen had a flag decal

in the front window of the

1951 DeSoto, powder blue, moon rim caps.

of course it was a green ecology one,

this was before such things

were used to raise PAC funds

for politically correct politicians

representing their buyers.

didn’t know how to ignore

Jesus in conversations,

of course anti-Vietnam

and peace, love and togetherness,

with a little help from

conspicuous friends.

not a Flag waver on this side of life,

no longer naive,

yet still a romantic cynic

rejecting any call to lockstep,

perhaps freak flag waving - ha.
