'helmets sitting atop rifles' timothy r gates, 5/29/2011
helmets sitting atop rifles,
reposed, standing.
boots emptied by enemy fire,
insufficient government issued vests, worthless.
iconic crosses, stars, cresant moons -
songs of patriotism doesn't bring them back,
their dirge refrains remain,
'another one, does, bite the dust.'
memory eternal!
we sing for and to them, praying
we'll sing together again.
told they've gone to a better place,
justification for our loss,
without our heroes there'd be no more soldiers.
memorial hymns,
presidents salute under blood stained flags.
the fallen rise,
reminding that the rockets red glare path
is not one of peace.
memory eternal.
